Directions to Trailhead: From I-25 exit onto Hwy 66 and head west towards Longmont. Travel west 13.2 miles, passing through Longmont and two major intersections, Main at 6.6 miles and Hover at 8.1 miles. At 13.2 miles a large sign reading "Rabbit Mountain Open Space" appears next to a large water tank on the right side of the road. Take a right and follow 53rd St. for 2.9 miles. Parking is on the right.
About This Trail: This is a small park that boulder takes care of very well. The trailhead parking area is large and looks good. This trail is great for going out and just taking it easy. very little climbing is done after the initial rise out of the parking area. The trail has a loop section which is a low grade well traveled path and a out and back section that begins with a slightly technical rocky grade and levels out until you get to the viewing area that marks the turn around point.
Trail Description: From the parking area take a short singletrack trail to the gravel road. Take a left on the gravel road and begin a climb that takes you to the .5 mile mark. Here you will take a right onto Eagle Wind trail and you will begin to ride over a rocky section of wide singletrack. 1 mile into it you run into the Eagle Wind trail split. Take a right and follow the trail as it borders the park. At 1.7 miles you will reach an open section of fence. Pass through this and continue on the trail. A sign at the 1.8 mile mark shows you were you are on the trail. At 2.2 miles you will reach a second portion of open fence. Continue straight until you reach the Eagle Wind split at 2.9 miles. Descend to the beginning of the Eagle Wind Trail which is at 3.4 miles. Cross the road and pedal up the Little Thompson Overlook Trail. This is a long stretch of uphill riding with extremely rocky jeep road. Continue .8 miles until you reach the end of the trail (4.2 miles.) Take a breather at the bench and enjoy the view or turn around for the descent back to the car. Descend to the bottom of Little Thompson Overlook Trail (.8 miles). Take a right on the gravel road or follow the singletrack and descend into the parking area (5.8 miles).
