All summer long, we've tried to provide you with challenging, and scenic, trails with our Trail of the Month feature. So far, all these trails have been leading up to this one. John's Loop is sure to take every rider's breath away -literally. However, if riding between 10,500 feet, and 12,360 feet, doesn't take your breath away, the views surely will. Most of the trail is above treeline, and there is plenty to see. Just take a look at the picture on the left. The trail rolls right over a series of small glaciers. Right over the top, Baby!

This trail is a 14 mile loop along a jeep road. It starts in Montezuma, which is 5.5 miles east of Keystone. Although it's not technically difficult, the higher altitude certainly makes the trail challenging. If you're not acclimated, the altitude will take it's toll on you, and likely make you walk up several hills. Just remember to take it easy, and drink plenty of water. With over half of the trail above treeline, you will feel on top of the world, and the views are unbelievable. Even the slide show we put together for this trail doesn't do the views justice.

Although the trail is a jeep road used by 4WD enthusiasts, it is still a prime area for mountain biking. I was on this trail over four hours, and only encountered four vehicles. One vehicle had about 20 people who were taking a tour of the area. All of them were very nice, and even cheered me on as I passed. I can't emphasize enough how nice the 4WD crowd is to mountain bikers. Most of the time they yield the trail, and allow considerable room. I've ridden many jeep trails over the last several months, and have yet to encounter anybody rude.

Along the trail you will come across many old mines that add to the ambiance of the area. During your ride, be sure to notice the buildings and equipment scattered around the trail. These things are great to look at and enjoy, although it's probably a good idea to view them from a safe distance. We certainly don't want anybody getting injured while exploring this gorgeous corner of Colorado. Staying a safe distance away will also help to preserve these ruins for future trail users.

If you're planning on doing this ride, I recommend getting an early start for four important reasons. First of all, weather in Colorado's high country is notorious for changing quickly -especially in the afternoon. Second, since half of John's Loop is above tree line, there is nothing to protect you from the elements -such as exposure to the sun, and to storms. Third, starting early is a good way to avoid much of the 4WD traffic. While riding, I noticed that vehicles didn't start showing up until after 11 am. Fourth, there is just something really zen-like about rising bright and early, and tackling mountains with high elevation and spectacular views. It's just a great way to start off the day.

Everyone, should be able to take this mountain on even if it's only part of the way. So, we don't want to hear any excuses about why you didn't go. Just be sure to get up early, bring plenty of water, and lots of sun screen. You might also want to bring a camera, because you're going to want to remember how it feels to be on the top of the world!
